Confusing signals over CM's 'free hand' statement

Monday, 31 July 2017 | SUNIl KUMAR | Dehradun

Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat had said that to take the State on a progressive path he needs a free hand from the party too. With this statement he has manged to grab the attention of everyone who may wonder whether the CM is under stress. One may also wonder whether the CM's statement means that he has not been given free hand and if not then who has been controlling him. Talking to The Pioneer a senior leader said that CM Rawat has made this statement in State Bharatiya Janata Party executive committee meeting here in Dehradun on Saturday in the presence of senior leaders like BJP national general secretary Ramlal and State BJP incharge Shyam Jaju and others too. Taking cognisance of it, ex CM Harish Rawat has said that with this statement CM has expressed his hindrance. If it is true then it is very disappointing because he believes CM is accountable to people so he deserves a free hand.

Although party workers are not ready to make any comment on it, they have given enough hint about why CM Rawat has failed to send message across the state about the government which has support of 57 out of 70 member Uttarakhand assembly. Although the BJP state president Ajay Bhatt has categorically said that in BJP the party is supreme but at the same time while replying to the media query about when two vacant cabinet minister berths will be filled, Bhatt said that it is prerogative of the CM. But, at the same time he said that he does not think that party would have deliberation on it before vice president election.

Political analysts said that CM Rawat has expressed his grudge because he wants to do something but he is not getting free hand. Who is causing hindrance is known to him or party senior leader only. Reason may be anything but he also said that his government has adopted zero tolerance against corruption. With this statement it is being understood that he had referred the NH-74 scam to CBI but it is yet to see any progress. The CM Rawat had announced inside the house during last budget session, that CBI had accepted the state's case and DoPT is going to issue notification on it. CM might have tried to grab the attention of the party senior leaders, who have conducted meeting twice or thrice to review the performance of the CM Trivendra singh Rawat in Delhi, on party forum.

With this statement CM has tried to convey message to his party workers — who believe that due to CM he/she is yet to be appointed on political posts — that he does not have free hand otherwise he would have appointed them earlier.
