Friday, 15 December 2017 | PNS | Chandigarh

Haryana Government will implement a project costing Rs 489 crore for “remodeling of augmentation canal” passing through the districts of Yamunanagar and Karnal.

The Standing Finance Committee which met under the chairmanship of Haryana Finance Minister, Capt Abhimanyu on Thursday approved this project. Under it, the capacity of augmentation canal is proposed to be increased to 6,000 cusec from existing 3,100 cusec.

Capt. Abhimanyu said that the now after its approval, the project would be send to NABARD for funding under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF). The project would be started during the year 2018-19 and completed by the year 2020-21.

On Commissioning, it would ensure additional discharge for districts in Western Jamuna Canal (WJC) Command and lift Canal Command falling in districts of Karnal, Panipat, Sonepat, Jind, Bhiwani, Rohtak, Charkhi Dadri, Hisar, Mahendargarh, Rewari and Jhajjar, said the Minister.

He said that after the construction of dams in upper catchment area of river Yamuna at Renuka, Kashau, lakhwar and Vyasi, continuous additional discharge would be available throughout the year in non-monsoon period. The State Government has planned to enhance the capacity of entire WJC system and augmentation canal is one of the major carrier channels of the system, he added.

It was informed in the meeting that the augmentation canal is running since its construction during 1970-71 and is in deteriorated condition.  At present whenever available water increases more than 3100 cusec at Hamida head, it runs in Katcha Main line lower Canal. Even discharge of 1000 Cusec runs upto 8-10 hours in Main line lower Canal, never reaches Indri head and is lost in seepage.
