Saturday, 08 July 2017 | PNS | Rudrapur

The consistent rainfall especially in the mountainous regions has affected routine life in the Terai region of Kumaon. In the Udham Singh Nagar district, the administration has alerted those living on the banks of the Gaula, Kosi, Dabka and Nandhaur rivers. The authorities have started releasing water from the barrages to maintain the water level in rivers. On the directions of the district magistrate, the disaster management team has also been formed. In addition to this, 36 flood posts have also been established in the district. Updates from these flood posts is being communicated to the Tehsil and district disaster centre. As done annually, residents of 120 villages on river banks here had already been warned earlier to abstain from entering rivers and nullahs in case of increase in water level. The district disaster management officer Anil Sharma informed that consistent updates are being received from the 36 flood posts. Further, six posts in Sitarganj and Khatima have been marked vulnerable with six posts in these two Tehsils being marked extremely vulnerable. There are 120 villages in the districts which are vulnerable to flood in rivers. Of these 68 villages are highly vulnerable while 52 villages are categorised as vulnerable. In case of flooding, the district administration is capable of evacuating more than 5,000 people to secure locations.
