Earlier, the syllabus and examinations of the IGIT were managed by the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT).

The IGIT is the second technical institute in Odisha to have been granted autonomous status by the UGC after the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, said IGIT Dean Academic Professor SN Mishra.
