Govt responsible for urban floods: Niranjan

Monday, 23 July 2018 | PNS | Bhubaneswar

Pradesh Congress Committee president Niranjan Patnaik on Sunday blamed the State Government for prevailing of flood like situation in urban areas saying that the situation has arises as drains are not beeing cleaned and maintained properly.

“From Cuttack to Kandhamal, Baleswar to Malkangiri, Puri to Rayagada, everywhere the low lands have been inundated. Because of callous attitude of the State and local administrations, knee-deep water is flooding bedrooms, classrooms and office premises,” alleged Patnaik.

He said common people are facing many problems due to inundation as drains in the towns and cities are not being maintained and cleaned properly and, thus, sewerage water is flooding the streets.

“When urbanisation is being promoted, basic infrastructure is not being created. Drainage system and roads are not being created in newly established colonies and blocks. When the Smart City is flooding, what to say about other citiesIJ Is this the picture of our development,” wanted to knowPatnaik.

Expressing apprehension that water level in rivers might rise further; he alleged that embankments have become week because of illegal sand excavation and transport by heavy vehicles day and night. The multipurpose shelters constructed in coastal areas are in ruined state. While the Government claims making people aware of floods, cyclone or lightning much before time, over 10,000 villages in the State have no mobile network. So how the State and Central Governments are keen to protect the precious lives,” wanted to know the PCC chief further.
