Man held for raping mentally challenged in city

The Commissionerate police arrested the owner of home for mentally-challenged here on Friday on the charge of repeatedly raping a mentally handicapped woman.

The accused was identified as Jayant Panda, owner of the Bikash Institute located at Sameigadia in the Mancheswar area.

The police swung into action after brother of the victim lodged a complaint with the Mancheswar police.

As per the complaint, brother of the victim contacted the organisation meant for rehabilitation of mentally challenged persons in 2014 to keep his sister. But she was repeatedly raped there by Panda. However, as she was mentally challenged nobody believed her.

Unable to bear the ordeal she had ran away from the home a number of times.

But this time after she narrated her ordeal they confronted Panda and due to his abnormal behaviour they approached the police.

After investigations with the help of experts, police found sufficient evidence in the victim’s allegation and arrested Panda.

The accused was arrested earlier on similar charges.
