Taking cognisance of media reports, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has formed a team to identify medium or small drains that cause water logging in the city during the monsoon season. The team has been given 10 days to submit a report to the officials.
The Dehradun municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey said, “As per the record of the MCD we have three big drains and 22 medium drains in the city.
Tenders were passed to clean these drains in the city. Recently we have seen news and photos in the newspapers and news channels of places having blocked drains.”
Elaborating further he said, “It is important to understand that Dehradun is a developing city and construction of buildings and colonies is very common here. We very often get complaints regarding the drainage system of these colonies.
Those building the colony sometimes fail to make a proper drainage system and make the water from the colonies go in temporary pits or holes far from the building. These take the shape of a drain.
For MCD cleaning such an area is difficult because the big machines fail to enter such small areas. During heavy rains, such drains create more water logging problem in these areas.”
Informing about the steps taken regarding the problem he said, “Taking steps to resolve this we have formed a team which has been given about 10 days time to submit a report. The team has been issued instructions to check the places that were shown in the newspapers and news channels.
After the report is submitted to us, a proper strategy will be formed for performing better in these areas so that people, especially during the coming monsoon season face no difficulties due to water logging."
