Friday, 27 December 2019 | PNS | Lucknow

Weeks after a rape victim was set ablaze by five men, including the accused, in Bihar area of Unnao (the victim died in a New Delhi hospital later), the SIT has completed the investigation and is set to file the chargesheet.
Superintendent of Police of Unnao, Vikrant Veer, said that an FIR was filed in this regard on December 5 and the case was probed by a Special Investigation Team.
“The SIT has prepared the chargesheet and it will be filed once the court opens,” the SP said.
The district police chief said the SIT had collected adequate evidences against all five accused, who were earlier arrested and sent to jail.
The five accused had allegedly set the rape victim ablaze by dousing her with kerosene while she was on her way to a local railway station to catch a train to Rae Bareli in connection with a case.
The victim, who suffered 70 per cent burns, was first taken to the community health centre at Sumerpur and was later referred to SPM Hospital in Lucknow.
When her condition deteriorated, she was air-lifted to New Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital where she died.
In her dying declaration, the victim had named Shivam Trivedi, Shubham Trivedi, Harishankar Trivedi, Ramkishor Trivedi and Umesh Vajpayee as the persons who set her ablaze.
On the directions of the government, an SIT was constituted to investigate the case.
