Patients recovery rate goes up in Maha in one month

Some good news emerged from the worst-coronavirus affected Maharashtra on Monday in the form of increase in the rate of recovery of patients by 26.47 per cent during the last one month — from 16.88 per cent on April 30 to 43.35 per cent on May 31, even as coronavirus claimed 76 lives and left 2,361 others infected in various parts of the State during the last 24 hours.

The number of deaths dropped in Maharashtra from 89 on Sunday to 76 on Monday. There had been a total of 591 deaths in Maharashtra during the previous six days. On May 26 (Tuesday) the state had witnessed 97 deaths, while there were 105 deaths on Wednesday, 85 deaths on Thursday, 116 deaths on Friday and 99 deaths on Saturday. Sunday’s Covid-19 toll was 89.

The number of new infected cases dropped from 2487 on Sunday to 2361 on Monday. At a time when Covid-19 appears to be peaking in Maharashtra, the increase in recovery rate has brought some solace to doctors waging a relentless battle against the pandemic.

As per the statistics put out by the state health department on Monday, the recovery rate stood at 12.91 per cent on March 31, twenty two days after the first person tested positive for coronavirus in the state on March 9. In the following month from April 1 to April 30, the recovery rate rose marginally from 12.91 per cent to 16.88 per cent. However, during the period from May 1 to May 31, the recovery rate increased by 26.47 per cent from 16.88 per cent to 43.35 per cent, which doctors fighting the Covid-19 battle is pretty impressive.

In terms of numbers, as many as 39 out of total 302 patients recovered from March 9 (when the first coronavirus case was recorded in the state) to March 31. In the following month from April 1 to April 30, 1773 patients out of total 10498 patients were discharged from various hospitals after full recovery. In the month from May 1 to May 31, the number of the patients recovering from Covid-19 rose from 10498 to 29,329. The number of recovered patients is out of a total 67,655 patients who had tested positive till the evening of May 31.

Apart from the increased recovery rate of 43.55 per cent, the case fatality rate of Maharashtra stands at 3.37 per cent. Currently, 5,67,552 people are in home quarantine.

That the number of Quarantine beds has increased substantially during the last two and a half months could be evidenced from the fact that there are 72,704 beds available in quarantine institutions. Currently, 36,189 people are in institutional quarantine.

Meanwhile, out of the total dead in the State on Monday, Mumbai accounted for 40 deaths,  while there were eight deaths in Pune, six deaths each in Mira-Bhyandar and Navi Mumbai,   three deaths in Vasai-Virar and Aurangbad,  two deaths each in Raigad, Kalyan –Dombivli, and one death each in Thane, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Jalna, Beed and Nagpur.

With the 76 more deaths and 2361 new infected cases, the total number of deaths in Maharashtra mounted to 2362, while the total infected cases rose to 70013. With 30108 patients have been discharged after full recovered, the state health authorities pegged the total number of “active cases” at 37574 as on Monday evening.     

In Mumbai, with 40 new deaths and 1413 fresh positive cases, the total number of deaths in Mumbai went up to 1319, while the total infected cases jumped to 41099. 

Of the 76 deaths reported in the state today, 45 were men while 31 were women. Thirty seven of them were aged over 60 years, 36 were from the age group 40 to 59 years and 3 were aged below 40 years. “Fifty one out of 76 patients (67%) had high-risk co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, “ a state health bulletin said.
