Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Thursday called for maximum employment every year to rural families under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA), leading to the formation of a committee to prepare a work plan.

The MGNREGA guarantees minimum100 days of work for those residing in rural areas in a fiscal year, said Chief Minister. Chhattisgarh state has been providing 50 additional days apart from it, an official release said.

The statement said that in fiscal 2016-17, rural families in the state received 42 days average work. This rose to 52 in 2017-18 and 57 in 2018-19 on average.

Chhattisgarh has performed better compared to other states as in maximum area there is only one crop system. So, there are more  possibilities to increase the work, said Baghel.

A committee headed by the Chief Secretary will have Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Finance, ACS Home, Principal Secretary Rural Development, Principal Secretary Forest, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Secretary Agriculture as members.

The Chief Minister wants the committee to submit a work plan within 15 days.
