Work for 4 underground reservoirs begins

nThe Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has started constructing four ‘underground reservoirs’ (UGR) and Booster Pumping Stations (BPS) which will improve water supply to the residents of West Kamal Vihar, Bijwasan, Mahipalpur, Rangpuri, Mundka, Karawal Nagar, Mustafabad, parts of Vikaspuri and Nangloi Jat constituency.

With 39.18 MGD supply capacity, theses UGR-BPS and expected to be completed by the end of September, a senior DJB official said.

A 26.80 Million Litres (ML) capacity UGR will be constructed at Sonia Vihar, 29.50 ML capacity UGR at Mundka, a 3.0 ML capacity UGR at Mahipalpur and another UGR at West Kamal Vihar will be constructed with each reservoir will also have a booster pumping station, he said.

DJB Chairman Raghav Chaddha said that intensive patrolling and repairs of leakages in the transmission and peripheral water mains are planned and will be executed before onset of summers.

“This will minimise shutting down of the system from the water treatment plants during summer. Old water pipe lines have been replaced to reduce physical losses and contamination of water.  Preventive maintenance works and rational distribution of water would result in improved supply of water in areas during the upcoming summer season,” he said.

Moving ahead with its commitment of constant endeavor to develop planned water supply to meet the growing demands of Delhi, Chaddha said that with commissioning of these projects lakh of residents of these constituency will be benefitted.

"As an immediate measure to meet water demand and to cover more areas, DJB is leaving no stone unturned in providing succour to people.  As per its mandate, DJB is bringing more areas into its water network and has set to achieve targeted 925 MGD (millions of gallons per day) of potable water production.

Every year water demand in the city reaches to its peak during the summers. To cater the need of consumers during the summer, the DJB has targeted water production of about 925 MGD in its summer action plan by optimising all its resources.
