Chandigarh heritage furniture set to be auctioned in Paris on March 24

Chandigarh’s heritage furniture designed by city’s designer Pierre Jeanneret is set to be auctioned by Paris based auction house- Cambi Casa d’Aste on March 24.

Six heritage chairs with a bidding price between 8000-10000 Euros and a sofa with a bidding price between 8000-10000 Euros will be auctioned by the auction house.

This is the fifth such auction of heritage items belonging to Chandigarh abroad this year.Earlier this year, 11 heritage items belonging to Chandigarh were auctioned in Luxemburg on January 10. 11 lots out of 14 heritage items designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret were sold during the auction for a sum of Rs 1,03,37,000 (1.03 cr) . The highest price was fetched by a Teak Sofa at Rs 20.58 lakh (23000 Euros) during the auction. Member of the Heritage Protection Cell Ajay Jagga on Wednesday wrote a letter to the Union Minister for External Affairs S Jayashankar, Ambassador of India to the Republic of Italy Dr Neena Malhotra and Deputy Chief of Mission, Italy, Neeharika Singh to inform about the auction in Paris on March 24 and demanding an immediate action to stop it. Jagga said that the auctions of Chandigarh’s heritage have been going on since past many years despite a ban on export from sea and air ports of heritage items.
