Dead fish in large numbers found floating in pond

Sunday, 19 September 2021 | RAJ KUMAR SHARMA | JHARSUGUDA

Thousands of dead fish were found floating in the Puranabasti pond side near here on Wednesday triggering panic among the locals as residents of the area suspected  water poisoning due to mixing of toxic chemicals from industrial waste.

Because of the incessant rain during the last two days industrial toxic water has got mixed with the pond at Puruna Basti. The dumping of untreated sewage and industrial waste into water bodies are some of the main reasons of pollution, particularly when there is heavy rainfall, said locals.

The residents also filed a formal complaint regarding the matter with the Regional Officer (RO) of the State Pollution Control Board, the Fisheries Department and the district administration.

Though an inquiry on the spot was started by the District Fisheries Department by sending water samples from the pond to laboratory for test, the officials suspect mingling of any poisonous substance in the water, which will be clear on receipt of water sample test report, said Additional District Fisheries Officer Bibek Soren.

Officials said a separate drain would be constructed as a permanent solution to ensure that industrial toxic waste emanating from industrial units don't mix up with the pond water.
