Thursday, 11 March 2021 | PNS | Chandigarh

In the backdrop of the sudden surge in Covid-19 cases in the union territory of Chandigarh, the UT Administration on Wednesday imposed fresh restrictions on the number of people in indoor and outdoor gatherings.

From now onwards, the maximum number of people for indoor gathering will be 100 or 50 per cent of the capacity of the venue, whichever is lower while the number is kept at 200 for outdoor gathering. The restriction is put on all kinds of gatherings including social, cultural, religious and family functions.

The decision was taken during the COVID-19 situation review meeting held by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore on Wednesday.

The Administration also decided to keep primary schools closed until the situation improves.   Badnore also directed the school authorities to talk to the parents, so that their children take proper precautions against COVID both inside and outside schools.

Expressing concern about the rising number of Corona cases, he directed strict implementation of COVID appropriate behaviour and intensifying checking and imposing fines on people, violating the COVID guidelines.

Meanwhile, with detection of 87 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the total case tally reached 22589 in Chandigarh.  One more resident succumbed to COVID-19 while the active cases crossed 800-mark.  According to the Chandigarh Health Department’s evening bulletin, there were 816 active cases till the evening while the death toll stood at 357.
