India poised to become second largest egg producer

The survey report from the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying indicated an upswing in the production of milk, eggs, and meat in the country. According to the report, the total milk production in the country is estimated to be 230.58 million tonnes in 2022-23, reflecting a 3.83 per cent  increase over the estimates of 2021-22. The egg production is projected to be 138.38 billion, marking a 6.77 per cent  rise compared to the previous year.  This may make India the second largest producer of eggs. Additionally, meat production is expected to reach 9.77 million tonnes, representing a 5.62 per cent  increase over the previous year.

The survey report is based on the results of the Integrated Sample Survey (ISS), conducted nationwide in three seasons: Summer (March-June), Rainy (July-October), and Winter (November-February).

India continues to maintain its position as the largest milk-producing country globally. According to the report, the total milk production in the country is estimated at 230.58 million tonnes during 2022-23, reflecting a growth of 22.81 per cent  over the past five years, from 187.75 million tonnes in 2018-19. Furthermore, there has been a 3.83 per cent increase in production during 2022-23 compared to the estimates of 2021-22. In previous years, the annual growth rates were 6.47 per cent in 2018-19, 5.69 per cent in 2019-20, 5.81 per cent in 2020-21, and 5.77 per cent in 2021-22.

The milk production from exotic/crossbred cattle increased by 6.16 per cent, while that from indigenous or non-descript cattle rose by 6.13 per cent compared to the previous year. Additionally, milk production from buffaloes increased by 4.44 per cent compared to 2021, with indigenous buffaloes contributing 31.58 per cent of the total production, followed by 29.91 per cent from crossbred cattle.

During 2022-23, the highest milk-producing state was Uttar Pradesh, accounting for 15.72 per cent of the total milk production, followed by Rajasthan (14.44 per cent), Madhya Pradesh (8.73 per cent), Gujarat (7.49 per cent), and Andhra Pradesh (6.7 per cent). In terms of annual growth rate (AGR), Karnataka recorded the highest AGR at 8.76 per cent, followed by West Bengal at 8.65 per cent, and Uttar Pradesh at 6.99 per cent over the previous year.

The total egg production in the country is estimated to be 138.38 billion during 2022-23, marking a growth of 33.31 per cent  over the past 5 years compared to the estimates of 103.80 billion in 2018-19.

Furthermore, the production increased annually by 6.77 per cent  during 2022-23 over 2021-22. In the past, the annual growth rates were 9.02 per cent  in 2018-19, 10.19 per cent  in 2019-20, 6.70 per cent  in 2020-21, and 6.19 per cent in 2021-22.

The contribution to the total egg production comes from Andhra Pradesh with a share of 20.13 per cent, followed by Tamil Nadu (15.58 per cent), Telangana (12.77 per cent), West Bengal (9.94 per cent), and Karnataka (6.51 per cent).

In terms of the Annual Growth Rate (AGR), the highest growth rate was recorded by West Bengal (20.10 per cent), followed by Sikkim (18.93 per cent), and UP (12.80 per cent).

The total meat production in the country is estimated to be 9.77 million tonnes during 2022-23, registering a growth of 20.39 per cent over the past 5 years compared to the estimates of 8.11 million tonnes in 2018-19. Furthermore, the production increased by 5.13 per cent in 2022-23 over 2021-22. In the past, the growth rates were 5.99 per cent in 2018-19, 5.98 per cent in 2019-20, 2.30 per cent in 2020-21, and 5.62 per cent in 2021-22.

The major contribution to the total meat production comes from Uttar Pradesh with a share of 12.20 percent , followed by West Bengal (11.93 per cent), Maharashtra (11.50 per cent), Andhra Pradesh (11.20 per cent), and Telangana (11.06 per cent). In terms of the growth, the highest AGR was recorded in Sikkim (63.08 per cent), followed by Meghalaya (38.34 per cent), and Goa (22.98 per cent).

India’s wool production rose by 2 per cent to 33.61 million kg during 2022-23, registering a negative growth of 16.84 per cent compared to 2018-19 when output was 40.42 million kg. However, the production increased by 2.12 per cent in 2022-23 over 2021-22.
