Acting on CM’s tweet, Medica Hospital saves child’s life

Sunday, 08 January 2023 | PNS | Ranchi

Following a twitter message Chief Minister (CM), Hemant Soren asking Medica Hospital, Ranchi to get involved in the treatment of a two year child from Dumka district of the State. The hospital swung into action and the patient almost recovered.
Addressing a press meet at the hospital premises on Saturday, presiding over the team of the doctors and support staff during treatment of the patient, Gunjan Kumar Singh said that two year old Ravi (name changed) came to the Hospital in a very emergency situation at around 3.00 am on December 8.  He was having difficulty in breathing, along with a lot of tiredness on his face, it seemed that he was breathing very badly, he added.

Singh further informed that initial investigation revealed that he has a very advanced stage tumour due to which his left nose, left eye, mouth and right nostril are badly affected. “The child was very upset because of the blocked nose and breathing through the mouth. His haemoglobin was 1.2 grams and the left eye and nose were oozing pus due to a severe infection. Given her critical condition due to extremely low haemoglobin, dehydration and poor nutrition, he required immediate intervention and blood transfusion. He was not even able to sleep due to difficulty in breathing,” he added.

The Doctor said initially it was very difficult to understand the case and the team immediately started treatment. They started feeding Ravi with blood transfusions every six hours and feeding with the help of tubes, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Head and Neck Oncologist Surgeon, Dr Madan Prasad Gupta said that he did the nose biopsy and all the reports and symptoms were pointing towards his suffering from cancer. “So Dr Gunjesh started the patient’s chemotherapy without losing any time. However, a week later, when the biopsy report came, it was confirmed that he had a strange type of cancer in his eye. Chemotherapy started showing effect and gradually the size of his tumor also started reducing. He started breathing through his nose and he also started feeling sleepy,” he added.

The Doctor further said that the second cycle of chemotherapy started on December 29. Now he is eating food comfortably and his childlike playfulness has also returned. After completing four cycles of chemotherapy, the doctors are planning for her surgery, he added.

Ravi's Parents were also present on the occasion, and said that  they had also taken him to AIIMS Delhi for treatment, but due to financial problems, he was forced to return home. After the tweet of Dumka DC and Civil Surgeon, Ravi has got a new life with the initiative of Chief Minister, Hemant Soren, the hard work of the Doctors of Medica and the cooperation of the hospital management, they added.
