Santali intellectuals, litterateurs and senior citizens under the banner of the Odisha Santali PG Students Association called on Ravenshaw University Vice-Chancellor Sanjay Kumar Nayak and expressed their gratitude for introducing Santali language into the second semester syllabus of graduation course for the current academic session in the university.
On the occasion, the VC accepted the delegation’s proposals, including introduction of Santali pass and honours department at the university.
The delegation also met Sailabala Autonomous College Principal Prof Dr Gayatri Biswal and urged her to introduce Santali language in the college.
Similarly, the representative met the Odisha Public Service Commission Secretary Pramod Kumar Mishra and demanded inclusion of Santali language in the OPSC examination. The Secretary has given assurance that he would make every effort to include the language in the OPSC examination.
The Santali language was added to the Constitution's 8th schedule in 2003, but the language has not been fully implemented in Odisha's educational system.
Consequently, more than eight and a half lakhs Santali people in Odisha are deprived of education in their mother tongue. Despite repeated demands, the Government has not taken any concrete step in this regard.
