Centre calls for All Party meet before Budget 2024

Tuesday, 30 January 2024 | Pioneer News Service | New Delhi

Ahead of the Budget Session, the Centre has called a meeting of floor leaders of different parties in Parliament on Tuesday. Sources in different political parties said that the all-party meeting is likely to witness acrimonious scenes, as the Opposition, which stood as the INDIA Bloc itself, is divided.

For the last few sessions, they together posed vehement protests both in the Government-convened meetings of all parties and in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

The last session saw the suspension of over 150 sitting Parliamentarians, and the issues are set to resonate in the meeting scheduled for Tuesday. The session will begin with President Droupadi Murmu’s address to both Houses, marking the President’s first address in the new Parliament.

The new Parliament has already observed two sessions — the Special Session in September 2022 when the new building was inaugurated and the Winter Session. Ideally, the Opposition parties would also convene a separate meeting to strategise, but this time, due to a changed equation in Bihar and West Bengal, the Congress’ largest allies and partners in the strategy against the government have changed tracks.

It is a customary practice ahead of every session for leaders of different parties to highlight the issues they want to raise in Parliament, and the government offers them a glimpse into its agenda while seeking their cooperation.
