Police bandobast clogs Delhi

Wednesday, 14 February 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi / Noida/Ghaziabad/Gurugram

Several kilometre-long traffic jams were observed on Tuesday morning on highways connecting Delhi to Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Police implemented measures such as barricades, iron nails, container walls, and concrete slabs to prevent protesting farmers from entering the national capital. Major border points between Delhi and its satellite towns experienced congestion and diversions in anticipation of a large farmers’ march.

As barricades were erected at Singhu, Tikri, Noida, and Ghazipur borders, many individuals had to cross the Singhu border between Delhi-Haryana and Delhi-Ghaziabad on foot at the Alipur and Tikri borders.

Bumper-to-bumper traffic was witnessed at Ghazipur, Noida, Ghaziabad, Singhu, Gurugram, and Tikri borders starting from 7 am.

Vehicles on the Delhi-Meerut expressway moved at a sluggish pace due to barricades blocking the roads for two to three kilometres. Service lanes were obstructed using concrete barricades, barbed wire, and trucks, disrupting usual traffic flow in the area.

About 100 to 150 police personnel were stationed at the Ghazipur border service road. Some entry and exit gates of select Metro stations near important installations, including Parliament, have been closed as prohibitory orders remain in force.

The stations affected are: Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk, Udyog Bhawan, Janpath, Barakhamba Road, Lok Kalyan Marg, and Khan Market.

In Noida, many people use the Ghazipur border road to travel to Delhi. The affected roads in the region connect the city to Bareilly, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Mussoorie, Muradabad, and Nainital. Commuters like Kritika Sharma reported being stuck in traffic jams despite leaving for the office as early as 6 am.

Hence, it is advisable to avoid these roads. Additionally, there was a traffic jam on the DND flyover.

A traffic police officer noted that over two lakh people travel between Delhi and Gurugram each day during working hours and recommended commuters to use Metro train services.
