Bokaro Steel Plant achieves milestone with Certification for Ship-Building Quality Steel

Tuesday, 27 February 2024 | R Sharma | BOKARO

In a significant achievement, Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) under the leadership of Atanu Bhowmik (DIC : BSL & RSP) and B.K Tiwari (ED : Works) has etched its name in history by becoming the first unit within the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) to receive the Works Approval Certificate for both Normal and High Strength Ship-Building Quality Steel from esteemed bodies like the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). This accolade, bestowed upon BSL in February 2024, marks a pivotal moment in the plant's journey, highlighting its commitment to excellence and innovation in steel production.

The journey towards this remarkable feat commenced with an inquiry from M/s Goa Shipyard Limited, prompting SAIL Corporate Office to propose that Bokaro Steel Plant pursue the Works Approval Certificate. Subsequently, the Research and Control Laboratory (RCL) at BSL, in collaboration with RDCIS, Bokaro Centre, embarked on a meticulous feasibility study to assess the production capabilities of BSL. After careful deliberation, it was decided to pursue certification for Normal and High Strength Ship-Building Quality Steel from ABS and IRS.

The process for the Approval of Manufacturers of Hull Structural Steel was initiated, culminating in multiple levels of rigorous process audits at various units of BSL, including SMS-II & CCS, HSM, and HRCF. Rigorous material testing at RCL and specific Weldability Tests conducted at the Welding Research Institute (WRI) under the aegis of Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) further underscored BSL's commitment to meeting the stringent certification requirements of ABS and IRS.

The significance of this certification extends beyond mere recognition; it signifies BSL's entry into the realm of supplying steel for commercial ships, a domain traditionally dominated by specialized players. The steel produced under this certification will find application in the construction of ship hulls, safeguarding the cargo, machinery, and accommodation spaces of commercial vessels. Notably, BSL has a rich legacy of supplying steel for various strategic naval applications, including submarines, frigates, and Diving Support Vessels (DSVs).

Coc (BSL) MK Dhan said BSL's achievement not only underscores its technological prowess and commitment to quality but also opens up new avenues for collaboration and growth in the maritime sector.
