Police out to extricate Palamu from the mesh of poppy, marijuana

Saturday, 30 March 2024 | PNS | DALTONGANJ

Palamu police are all out to extricate this district from becoming a narcotic district

It has seized 160 kgs of poppy straws that were spread for Sun baking in the jungles of Manatu today. One has seen boiled paddy being Sun baked but here narcotic like poppy straw.

Never in the history of recovery or seizure of poppy straw such a quantity was ever seized that too in the jungles for drying up. The location where 160 kgs of poppy straw have been seized is Metar which is still seen as Red soil.

Palamu SP Reeshma Ramesan last year had asked the police to unearth heroin and arrest drug peddlers. Heroin was seized in varying grams from 5 grams to 20 grams plus.

It was seized today too. A couple of arrests too were made. But it is after all a different story with the poppy and marijuana. It is recovered in huge weight. Where there are these narcotics illicit arms can't be far behind. Police in Palamu recovered two illicit arms today.

Here in Palamu it appears one police station is vying with the other in terms of recovery of poppy and marijuana. And who has the last big laugh - the SP here said the police sources.

Ramesan said, "The model code of conduct came into effect on March 16. Today it's March 28. 12 days gone and in these 12 days police in Palamu have recovered narcotics worth 1 crore of rupees."

Asked if as SP she would treat it as narco extremism to which Reeshma Ramesan said "It's out and out narcotics trade and profit. I have launched a war against it."

Again pestered that the way these banned crops poppy and marijuana are cultivated, smack of the patronage of the naxals for these banned cash crops SP Palamu said "If you go by the terrain or topography then it is what the naxals have always preferred to like remote and inaccessible plot of land, mostly of the forest and again the land on which these banned crops are to be cultivated, invariably find a nearby water source."

SP said "Terrain lying across the river Amanat is like a haven for the illegal growers and cultivators."

Sources said there are narcotic states like Afghanistan, Bolivia, Cambodia and to a great extent Iran where drug menace is rampant but here in Jharkhand's backwater Palamu there is so much of narcotics boggles the mind.
