Wait gets longer for government formation in State

Friday, 02 February 2024 | Pranav Pratyush | Ranchi

Political situation in Jharkhand is taking new turns every now and then. After Hemant Soren’s resignation from the post of Chief Minister and his subsequent arrest by Enforcement Directorate, a delegation of JMM-Congress-RJD coalition reached Raj Bhawan on Wednesday evening and submitted its claim to form a new government in the State led by CM nominee Champai Soren. They claimed to have support of 43 legislators, which is two more than the magic figure of government formation in Jharkhand.

However, Governor CP Radhakrishnan told them to wait for some time till he takes a decision. On Thursday evening also the same delegation led by Champai Soren and four MLAs Pradeep Yadav, Satyanand Bhokta, Binod Singh and CLP Leader Alamgir Alam met the Governor. They urged the governor to call the coalition for government formation at the earliest. But, the Governor again asked them to wait till he gets proper opinion in the wake of the current political situation.

“We had a fruitful discussion with the Governor today. We urged him to give us time for swearing in ceremony at the earliest because it has already been more than 20-22 hours that there is no government in the State. The Governor has listened to us and said that he considers the claim submitted by us and after some consultations he would invite us,” said Congress MLA Pradeep Yadav.

Sources said that the Raj Bahwan has asked for a legal opinion from the Ministry of Home affairs on the current political situation of the State.

The political drama continued till late evening on Thursday as after the delegation meeting the Governor, 43 MLAs of the ruling coalition started from Ranchi Circuit house to Birsa Munda Airport to be flown to Hyderabad. It was said by some of the leaders that the legislators were on a casual tour to the Telangana Capital and will return soon. But, party insiders said that the MLAs were being taken to ensure that the flock remains intact and the opposition cannot influence them by any means.

The legislators reached the airport around 7:30 in the evening and boarded two chartered flights that were arranged for them beforehand. However, even after waiting for two hours the flights were not allowed to take off due to low visibility owing to foggy conditions prevailing in the State.

The legislators were on their way back to Ranchi circuit house at the time of filing of this report. The MLAs said at the airport that when weather conditions will improve they will fly to Hyderabad and if the Governor gives time for swearing in ceremony they will attend the ceremony at Raj Bhawan.
