Online system for remote monitoring of Simhastha preparations

Monday, 30 June 2025 | PNS | Ujjain

The government has introduced an innovative online system to keep a close watch on the preparations for Simhastha 2028. This new system enables senior officials to monitor ongoing construction works from anywhere, whether using their mobile phones or laptops, eliminating the need for frequent site visits. With this development, officials will be able to access real-time progress reports and updates on various projects, enhancing efficiency and ensuring timely completion.

Construction works worth approximately Rs 20,000 crore are currently underway in Ujjain and its surrounding areas in preparation for the massive religious gathering. The Project Monitoring Information System (PMIS) has been implemented to facilitate the tracking of these projects, providing live updates on progress and enabling the detection of any delays or issues directly from the officials' mobile devices or laptops.

Collector Roshan Kumar Singh has spearheaded the introduction of the PMIS software to streamline monitoring. The software allows for daily updates on Simhastha-related works, including progress reports, expenditure statements, and predictive analyses of potential delays. Both state-level and district-level officials will have access to the platform, ensuring oversight at all levels. To further ensure accuracy, geo-tagging of construction sites has been made mandatory, providing precise location tracking and visual records of the works.

Collector Singh explained that with multiple construction sites being active simultaneously, physically inspecting each site every day had become challenging. However, the introduction of PMIS has allowed officials to remotely monitor work status, manpower deployment, and photographic evidence, all geo-tagged for authenticity. The software also tracks project expenses, providing a comprehensive overview of ongoing developments.

Previously, daily on-site inspections were difficult to carry out due to the scale of the projects. The new system allows officials to monitor the works remotely, ensuring greater transparency, efficiency, and the timely completion of preparations for Simhastha 2028.

In addition to the digital monitoring system, Simhastha 2028 will leverage advanced technologies, including mobile apps, e-passes, virtual darshan (virtual viewing of religious rituals), AI-based information services, facial recognition systems, and drone surveillance. These technologies will be essential for effective crowd management, publicity, and security arrangements. Furthermore, a modern Command and Control Center will be set up in Ujjain to oversee all operational aspects during the event, ensuring a smooth and secure experience for participants and visitors alike.

The government’s adoption of advanced technologies for Simhastha 2028 is a part of its larger vision to enhance the overall experience for millions of pilgrims who will visit Ujjain. With the integration of AI-based services and virtual darshan, devotees from across the world will be able to experience the religious rituals remotely, eliminating the need for physical presence, especially in the case of large crowds. This approach is expected to significantly improve accessibility for elderly and differently-abled individuals, while maintaining the sanctity of the event.

Additionally, drone surveillance and facial recognition systems will play a crucial role in ensuring security during the massive event. These technologies will help monitor crowd movements, detect potential security threats, and ensure the safety of pilgrims.

The establishment of the Command and Control Center will further streamline communication and coordination, providing a central hub for managing all logistical, security, and operational requirements during Simhastha 2028. With these modern tools in place, the event is set to be one of the most efficiently managed religious gatherings in India.
