Special Ops 2: Himmat Singh’s Legacy marches on

With returning characters, a fresh villain and a high-stakes digital war, the new season of Special Ops is a hit, writes Abhi Singhal

I’ve been a fan of Special Ops ever since it first released during the COVID-19. From the very first episode of Season 1, the moment Himmat Singh was introduced to the world, it was clear the show was a hit. This was followed by Special Ops 1.5, which delved into Himmat Singh’s backstory with, The Himmat Story.

Now, the newest season has premiered on JioHotstar, retaining almost all the lead characters — making it even more compelling.

Special Ops Season 2 is a highly gripping and entertaining cinematic take on the spy world, showcasing what it truly takes for an officer to step forward and protect the nation.

This season’s storyline is rooted in artificial intelligence, exploring how a country’s AI capabilities can either win a war or bring an entire nation to its knees. As I always say, hail the man — and yes, that’s for Kay Kay Menon. Still leading as the protagonist, he plays the hero with remarkable ease. The most exciting new addition to the web series is Tahir Raj Bhasin, portraying Sudheer Awasthi — a character determined to gain control of Indian data and sell it to China. All the main characters have returned, adding strength, relatability and depth to the series. As in previous seasons, Karan Tacker plays Farooq Ali, Vinay Pathak impresses once again as Abbas Sheikh, Muzammil Ibrahim returns as Avinash, and Juhi Kashyap is continued by  Sayami Kher. A slight change is seen in the character of Ruhani Sayyed, now played by Shikha Talsania.

Himmat Singh remains the heart of Special Ops, from its origin to its latest episodes. Kay Kay Menon’s portrayal — from the emotional turmoil of his personal life to his unwavering commitment to serving the nation — captures Himmat’s complexity with grace. Truly commendable — calm yet fiery. The storyline directed by Neeraj Pandey and Shivam Nair involving Banerjee Saab and Chadha Saab (played by Kali Prasad Mukherjee and Parmeet Sethi), their connection to Himmat Singh returns, offering more of the drama fans love.

Tahir Raj Bhasin, as the antagonist, adds a fresh layer of intensity and a strong hook that keeps viewers engaged through all seven episodes. Although the final episode feels slightly rushed, the series still manages to meet the high expectations set by its predecessors.

Thoughtfully placed flashbacks from earlier seasons add to the emotional depth and narrative cohesion. The climax is the reason enough to watch the entire season — revealing the unexpected culprit is a genuine shocker. The final scenes, featuring Farooq neutralising Sudheer, deliver the heroic moments that make this a must-watch.
