Vinay Pathak’s love for cinema and theatre is in equal measure. Known for his subtle histrionics and comic timing, he tells you how Barff is one project he was longing to be with. Excerpts
Tell us something about your character in the play.
There are three main characters and I play a doctor. He is caught up in an unfamiliar situation, a medical conflict you may say. The situation is such that the others’ simplicity and belief makes him realise that most things in this world run on people’s beliefs and how they see the world.
How was your experience working with Saurabh ShuklaIJ
Absolutely excellent. He’s an old friend. I’ve known him for more than 20 years. In fact, he’s more like family. I am really grateful that he gave me the opportunity to be part of the play. This is actually my first Hindi play.
How did you agree to do thisIJ
Well, as you know, it was originally a film script written by Saurabh. I was already aware about the story. When he narrated to me the version adapted for theatre, I was hooked. It’s a great script and I absolutely loved it.
Is there any genre you prefer over othersIJ
As long as the script is good, I can do comedy, tragedy, drama or anything else for that matter. Even Barff can’t be restricted to a particular genre as there are bits of drama, satire and thriller in it.
Do you ever feel that you have been restricted to a mould of comedyIJ
People have been saying since Bheja Fry that comedy is my only identity. Consider this is my latest attempt to overturn this opinion about me.
