While the demand for setting up of a permanent High Court Bench in western Odisha is intensifying, lawyers in this steel city on Tuesday took to streets and held a successful 12-hour bandh demanding establishment of a High Court Bench here and a special district status to Rourkela.
Hundreds of members of the Rourkela Bar Association protested against the Government’s apathy towards their demands at various places of the city including the main entry point Panposh Chhak and Bisra Chhak by burning tyres. Following the protest, hundreds of vehicles were stranded majorly affecting students and office-goers. The Congress and the BJP supported the lawyers’ demands.
Members of the Rourkela Bar Association have been observing three days of cease-work every month for quite some time.
“It has been our longstanding demand for recognising the city as a special revenue district by combining Bonai sub-division and Rourkela-Panposh sub-division. But the Government has not been accepting our demands. So, we have resorted to this strike,” Rourkela Bar Association president Satya Sharma said.
