Maintaining that he wanted to have “long-term relationship” with people of the country, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said on Thursday that unlike Prime Minister Narendra Modi who “is ageing”, “is panicky and wants everything in a hurry” and “lies to the people”, he was not interested in lying and would keep all his promises made to the voters.
Addressing a large election rally in Nagpur, Gandhi said: “I speak truth with you. I want to have a long-term relationship with you. I don’t lie. I have no interest in lying. Lies do not last long. Truth will come out sooner or later. I have not come here to be in politics for one or two days. I want to work with you people for 10, 15, 20 years. Hence I will not lie with you. Modi ji is ageing, is panicky and so he wants to do everything in haste. Hence he lies,”
Accusing Modi having “failed” to deliver on all his promises –be it Rs 15 lakh each deposit in the bank accounts of people, Gandhi said: “Let’s Modi tell the people what has he done during the last five in fighting corruption, creating jobs and redressing farmers’ distress. Unemployment is at 45 years’ high. The youth are running here there for jobs. In UPA regime, we brought out 140 million people out poverty. But Modi has once again pushed crores of people into poverty. The money from the demonetisation went into the pockets of Nirav Modi, Mehul Chowksi and others who took the money away from the country”.
Terming Congress' proposed minimum income guarantee programme — Nyuntam Aay Yojana (NYAY) as the "surgical strike" on poverty, Modi said: "Just like Arjun had focus only on the eye of the fish, I have seen my target and will hit it with my arrow.... Under NYAY, the Congress will deposit `3.6 lakh rupees each in five years directly into the accounts of all the 20 per cent poorest people of the country".
