Continuous deaths of leopards in Mhow Sub Division forest an alarming call

Thursday, 25 April 2024 | PNS | INDORE

On Wednesday, the leopard which was limping in an injured state in the Manpur range of the Mhow sub division and was caught unconscious after a tranquilizer gun shot in the forest , died on the way to the hospital for treatment. The sudden death raised many questions among Mhow city and animal lovers because the leopard was seen limping and wandering in the forest area for many days but was alive, but as soon as the leopard was made unconscious with a tranquilizer gun to catch it in the forest department, the leapord died.  People say that the leopard died due to overdose of medicine to make it unconscious.

Just last week, a dead body of a leopard was found in Manpur forest range. Thus, in the last one week itself, animal lovers are shocked by the death of two adult leopards in Manpur forest range. According to sources about six leopards were killed in Manpur forest range in the last one year.

Mhow tehsil located in Indore district is spread over about 1600 square kilometers and there is about 20% forest area in Indore district, which is entirely located in the Mhow tehsil area. Seven rivers originate from the Janapav mountain of Mhow, which all flows through the forest area of the Mhow tehsil and keeps forest green.

But since some time, Mhow and Indore Forest Department is not paying attention to the forests of Mhow and to protect the forest animals. Due to this,  leopards are being killed continuously in Manpur forest range.

Dozens of farm houses, hotel, colonies are being developed in the forest area. Which has become a big threat to the forests and wild animals. According to the information received from the sources, on the pretext of staying in the farm houses adjacent to the forests, hunters and people smuggling the parts of wild animals also regularly visit the Mhow forest area. Many times these hunters hunt the leopard and make the whole leopard disappear due to which the leopard hunting doesn't come in light but many times the leopard gets injured by the hunter's  and is unable to be caught by the hunter. And runs away into the forest in an injured state, which is noticed by the villagers and then the villagers inform the forest department and then the forest department becomes active.

According to the sources, the leopard's body parts are sold for crores of rupees, also the cremation of the dead body of leapord is also done by the forest department employees at a secluded place where questions are also being raised on this issue.

Additional Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh Forest Department,  J N  Kansotiya while talking to The Pioneer told he is very sad hearing the deaths of leapords in Mhow sub division and he will immediately form a committee to find out the reason for the continuous deaths of leopards in Manpur range of Mhow, which will reach Mhow very soon for detail investigation.  He himself will also visit Mhow forest area.
